Kelly's 1906 Directory Westmorland

"WESTMORLAND is a small but hilly shire, in the northwestern corner of England,
divided from the Irish Sea by the northern part of Lancashire, and the south of
Cumberland ; its south-west angle touches the head of Morecambe Bay, into which
flows the frith of the river Kent, having Cumberland on the north and west, from
which the Eamont and Tees partly separate it, Durham on the north-east,
Yorkshire on the south-east and Lancashire on the south and west. Its greatest
breadth is 43 miles, and length 36, but it is very irregular in shape ; it
comprises an area of 505,330 acres." |
